Mayberry Murders

This is true story of a...

Pt 1

Mayberry Murders

This is true story of a horrible murder in the small town of Bonito city in 1885. I thought this would be an appropriate Halloween tale. But due to the nature of its victims some parents may not want to read this.

—

Martin Nelson made his way into Bonito City, New Mexico in 1885. Bonito is the Spanish word for beautiful and this area really is a very beautiful place among the hills covered with gorgeous trees. Nelson was a miner and was draw to the area in search of gold but was not interested in working to obtain it. He was obviously a drifter and possibly a gunslinger. The place he found to stay was a two-story log hotel owned by the Mayberry family.

On the night of the murder, local miners had dinner in the lower story of the hotel and left to their lodging. The hotel only had two residents staying on the second story: Dr. R.E Flynn from Ohio and the younger miner, but all of the residents of the hotel were in bed by 10:00 pm. At about 1:00 a.m. in the morning Martin Nelson arose and knocked on the door of the room of the two Mayberry boys, which was also on the second floor.

When John Mayberry, age seventeen, opened the door to the Mayberry bedroom. Martin Nelson fired two shots from his .38 caliber rifle, killing him instantly. He then killed seven-year-old Eddie Mayberry with a single shot. (so ugly I know, so sad for these boys)

He next murdered Dr. Flynn, who had gotten up when he heard the shots and was running down the hall to see their source. The fourth fatality was Mr. Mayberry, who was also responding by climbing the stairs to the shootings. He was shot through the heart on the landing. Nelson next shot daughter Nellie Mayberry in the side and left her for dead. She would become the only survivor of the hotel massacre. Mrs. Mayberry had climbed the stairs when Nelson shot her in the chest. She ran out into the street with a trail of blood and went to the nearest house for help. Nelson had followed her and shot her in the street and then left her for dead.

Pt2

Mr. Herman Conbruch, a neighbor, ran over to her and picked...

Pt2

Mr. Herman Conbruch, a neighbor, ran over to her and picked her up as Nelson started to head back towards the house. “Oh, he killed all of us,” she said. To Mr. Conbruch’s question of whom she answered, “Nelson” breathed and fell to the ground dead. Mr. Conbruch ran back into his house and looked out through a side window where we saw Nelson kick Mrs. Mayberry into an irrigation ditch.

Pete Nelson, the local saloonkeeper (no relation to Martin Nelson) appeared in the street and wrestled with Martin. The older Pete was no match for the younger Martin and was shot to death; his body left in the street. Herman Beck, the local storekeeper, came out to see what the commotion was all about and was the last victim of Martin Nelson.

On his return to the Mayberry house Nelson stopped at the Rademacher’s place. When Mrs. Rademacher asked “who is there” Nelson gave her another fellow’s name and when she opened the door there was Nelson with a big gun and she cried out, “oh, Mr. Nelson, don’t kill me” and Nelson said, “No, I would not hurt you at all, all I want is a cup of coffee.” He was so excited and nervous that Mrs. Rademacher had to hold the coffee cup to his lips, as she afterward told the story. The citizens of the village locked themselves in their houses for the rest of the night, while Nelson roamed around and finally climbed Littleton Canyon.

There were a total of eight people killed, including the murderer later the next day, and one wounded. Nellie Mayberry, who was the only survivor of the massacre, stayed with the Skinner family until relatives came and took her to the East. Local folklore has it that no one entered the hotel for fifteen years. Locals reportedly told of shrieks, groans, and lights flickering in the log hotel.

Pt3

Pt3

In 1900, the population was 283. By 1930 the town had very little inhabitants due to other reasons. The railroad had decided to dam up the area so they could build through an area adjacent to it. The whole town only lasted about 30 years. The site the Mayberry hotel laid on is under lake water now.

This story deeply disturbs me, as I can’t figure out why a man would do all this? My first thought was a dark possession. Does that really exist? I think it may be something I’m deeply afraid of. Am I just being superstitious? Was it a botched robbery attempt? Some say Mr. Nelson was guilty of inappropriate actions towards the young Mayberry girl and that Dr. Flynn tried to stop him, causing chaos throughout the house? I think I’m writing this story so that I may get it out of my system and for get about it. Gary Cozzens is a jerk for placing it right in the middle of his historic book.

Happy Halloween!!!!
