"Men wanted for hazardous Journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honor and recognition in case of success."
The ad Captain Shackleton placed in a London fish rag looking for a crew on his 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. He received more than enough recruits. I think this is due to people wanting more than just compensation for their work. They would also want honor.
I think you can find this in many traditional American jobs that are now considered immigrant or low standard work. Each week I find reasons to feel honor at my factory job. The quality of work from our talented crew is outstanding. It feels great to make something and have it cherished and made part of family legacies. I wasn’t feeling this about the cubical jobs or retail jobs I’ve had. I think factory work needs to come back to the US.
